NEGS Show Jumping Winter Classic: Where Community Meets Excellence
A Two-Day Competition Brings Elite Riders from Across NSW to NEGS Equestrian Centre
ARMIDALE, NSW – The NEGS Show Jumping Winter Classic gets underway this weekend at our Equestrian Centre, welcoming riders from across New South Wales to compete in what has become the largest show jumping event held by a school on school grounds in Australia. While not an interschools competition, the Winter Classic demonstrates what's possible when a school invests in world-class facilities and commits to supporting the broader equestrian community.
For two days, our 50-hectare campus becomes a hub of activity. Riders arrive early, handlers prepare their horses, volunteers direct traffic, families gather to watch, and our Equestrian Centre team manages the complex choreography of running multiple rings simultaneously. It's the kind of event that works because everyone – staff, P&F volunteers, participating students, and our generous sponsors – believes in why it matters.
What Happens Over These Two Days
The two-day event features comprehensive competition across multiple rings and divisions, offering riders of all levels the opportunity to compete at a premier regional venue. The Winter Classic offers extensive competition across two rings, accommodating height divisions ranging from 45 cm through to 120 cm, ensuring opportunities for riders at every stage of their jumping career.
With course walks beginning at 7:30 AM on both days, the competition spans elite amateur classes through to junior competitions, providing a genuine pathway for emerging talent. Saturday through to evening, culminating in the popular Calcutta Open 6 Bar and Open 6 Bar classes. Sunday continues in a similar format, with Ring 2 hosting younger riders and smaller divisions, while Ring 1 caters to higher-level competitors.
For many riders, this event represents a milestone – a chance to test themselves against quality competition in a venue that feels welcoming rather than intimidating. For some, it's about connecting with the broader equestrian community. For others, it's simply a genuinely good day out watching horses and riders at their best.
Built by Our Community, Enabled by Excellent Facilities
The success of the Winter Classic reflects the outstanding collaboration between NEGS staff, the P&F community, dedicated volunteers, and the participating riders themselves. The Equestrian Centre team has worked tirelessly to prepare the facilities and manage logistics, while volunteers from within the NEGS community have given generously of their time and expertise.
NEGS students and staff who are participating or volunteering bring their own energy and commitment to the event. Seeing young people take responsibility for running competitions, managing course jumps, or simply helping visitors find their way around campus – that's where character development happens in real time.
The Winter Classic is possible because NEGS has made a genuine commitment to equestrian facilities. Our campus includes multiple arenas, professional jumping courses, comprehensive stabling, and the infrastructure to manage an event of this scale. These aren't facilities built for occasional use – they're built for serious equestrian development, whether that's supporting our students or hosting events that benefit the broader community.
That investment in facilities, combined with our team's expertise and our community's support, allows us to host something truly significant: the largest show jumping event held by a school on school grounds. It's a distinction that speaks to what becomes possible when regional institutions invest in genuine excellence.
Supported by Partners Who Believe in Regional Equestrian Excellence
What genuinely moves us is the breadth of support from businesses across our region and beyond. These aren't just sponsorships on paper – they reflect genuine investment in supporting equestrian pathways in rural NSW.
The Winter Classic would not be possible without the generous support of regional and national sponsors who share NEGS's commitment to equestrian development:
Event Partners: North & Northwest Show Jumping Club (INNWSJC), JCQ (Johnstone Concrete & Quarries).
Equestrian Services & Specialists: Thunderbolt Equine Veterinary Services, Completely Equine, Hampton & Harlow Equestrian, PLS Performance Horses, Kohnke's Own, and eartags.com.au – providing expertise, equipment, and care that keeps riders and horses performing at their best.
Transport and Hospitality Support: Edwards Coaches, Trojan Horse Floats, Ken Jarrett Livestock & Property, and New England Toyota – keeping people and horses moving.
Agricultural and Pastoral Partners: Billabong Angus, MT Riddock Pastoral Co., and LST – reflecting the agricultural heart of our region.
The breadth of support from local and regional businesses demonstrates how strongly the equestrian community values events like this. These sponsors don't just provide financial support – they're invested in seeing regional equestrian talent thrive. We're genuinely grateful for their partnership.
What Makes This Event Matter
In a competitive equestrian landscape dominated by metropolitan venues, hosting a Winter Classic in Armidale sends a message: regional riders don't need to leave home to access quality competition and facilities. Regional communities can come together to create something excellent.
For NEGS, it's an opportunity to do what we do best – create spaces where young people can test themselves, where community partnerships matter, and where excellence is celebrated in a genuine, grounded way. It's not about flashy marketing or institutional prestige. It's about enabling riders to compete well and supporting an equestrian community that's vital to rural Australia.
Looking Forward
Whether you're a competitor here this weekend, a volunteer helping things run smoothly, a spectator enjoying quality jumping, or a sponsor supporting rural equestrian development, you're part of something that matters. This event works because of everyone who shows up and invests in it.
We hope the Winter Classic becomes an event that riders and families look forward to year after year – not because it's the biggest or the flashiest, but because it's authentic, well-run, and genuinely welcoming to the equestrian community.
