NEGS News - Term 4 Week 4

45 students in Years 7-11 attended the Stand Tall ‘Dream Again’ event in Tamworth on Thursday 28 October.  This first-of-a-kind event for the New England region was attended by 4,000 students.

The guest speakers and musicians presented a common and inspiring message:

  • Dare to dream
  • Have a vision
  • Discover your gift
  • Embrace your passion
  • Be kind
  • Be grateful
  • Do not be limited by what you have seen or what you think is possible
  • Know that adversity does not define who we are

These affirmations, which are consistently incorporated into the day-to-day school life at NEGS, provide an excellent recipe for enhancing school culture.

This week, our Year 5 and 6 students are in Canberra. Thank you to Mrs Heidi Dent, Mrs Liane Nixon and Mr Jamie Moore for accompanying our students. We look forward to hearing about your adventures.

This weekend, our Year 11 students will be at Coffs Coast Adventure Centre – time will be spent refining leadership roles and responsibilities for all senior students.

It gives me great pleasure to announce additional leadership positions for 2023.

Canberra Trip

With Stage Three heading off on their excursion, it has been a wonderful opportunity to spend time off campus in our Nation’s Capital. Our students were both amazed and amazing, as we participated in a number of activities across a vast array of attractions. This included opportunities to explore the many wonders of Canberra, with students participating in a special wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, visits to the  National Museum of Australia and Art Gallery, along with Parliament House and Questacon, just to mention a few.

Students also participated in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45.00 per student, under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. With the rebate paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

The Pirates of the Curry Bean

With preparation well underway, excitement is building amongst the student body. Our musical performance will take place in Week Nine with a matinee on Monday 5th December, followed by a night performance on Tuesday 6th December. All students from Pre-K to Year Six are involved in the production. Ticketing details will be received in Week Five.

The start of term went off with a bang for NEGS, with 28 riders competing at the Tamworth  Interschools Horse Extravaganza over the first week back. This was a huge event running over 5 days with many disciplines competing together. Our team had a great week with almost every NEGS student competing coming home with at least one ribbon, many with an armful. It was great to see all the girls supporting each other and cheering on their fellow competitors and team mates. A big Thank you to all the parents who came along and helped out. It was a pleasure to spend a few days catching up and/or getting to know you all a bit more. There is something really lovely about afternoons relaxing with cheese, biscuits and great company.  Please see below a list of the many achievements from our girls over ISHE.

We look forward to catching up with many families at our Carol Service and BBQ; it will be a lovely way for us as a school community to finish the year. It has been a great year. Thank you to all the parents who have helped with P and F events and ensured the success of all our events.

As a P and F, we are already looking towards 2023 and the ways in which we can foremost support our children, families and our school. We aim to build our special NEGS community and look forward to your engagement in doing this. We invite all parents to consider how you might be able to get involved.

In Term One, our focus will be the Autumn Fair. Last year this was a very special day for our community. We are calling on our families to get involved. Save the date, 1 April 2023!

Can you help?

  • Do you have a business, or are you happy to approach a business to consider being a NEGS Fair Sponsor? We are looking to have 10 businesses come on board. Last year we were grateful for the support of New England Toyota, Edward Coaches, UNE Life, APJ Law, Piddingtons, Edstart and Taleb Australia. Interested in discussing this, please contact Tricia at triciagerigk69@gmail.com
  • Would your business or would you approach a business to ask for a raffle price?
    • Accommodation
    • Jewellery
    • Gift Vouchers
    • Electronics
    • Homewares
    • Fashion/cosmetics
    • Wine/restaurant vouchers
    • Gourmet hampers
    • Open to all your suggestions and donations

A very big thank you to the parents who have taken on the roles of Liaison Parents; these are key volunteer roles and will help connect the families within each year group.

Koala Colouring and Poster Competition

Armidale is an area of regional koala significance however, local and nationwide populations are declining. On the 11th of February 2022, koalas were listed as an endangered species. Once a thriving 3-4 million community, koala numbers are less than 200,000. Saving our koala population is vital to the species’ survival, and you and your students can help.

The Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership Project (NTKPP) is hosted by Southern New England Landcare Ltd (Southern New England Landcare), partnering with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. The project supports the NSW Government’s aspirational goal to: “Double the koala population in NSW by 2050”. The Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership – a project hosted by the local Landcare network here in Armidale, has established strong connections with the local community to develop key actions for koala conservation, focussing on:

  • Koala habitat conservation
  • Conservation through community action
  • Safety And health of Koalas
  • Building our knowledge.

Southern New England Landcare are also running a colouring and poster competition. The colouring in pages are below, however, the competition to design an A3 sized poster (either individual students or class) for the following topics:

Kindergarten – a general poster about koala facts aimed to increase general knowledge about koalas.

Years 1-2 - a general poster about koala facts aimed to increase general knowledge about koalas.

For Years 3-4 - a poster about the threats koalas are facing. It could focus on one threat or include all threats to koalas in our community.

For Years 5-6 – a poster about how students and the community can help save our local koala population.

To submit entries, please either drop them off to the Southern New England Landcare office in Hannahs Arcade or post them to PO Box 85, Armidale 2350 by the 28th of October.

The finalists will be displayed at the Black Gully Music Festival on the 12th of November.

The Black Gully Music Festival is located behind NERAM and starts at around 10am. It is a celebration of community, live local music and biodiversity.

Southern New England Landcare will have a stall with information and interactive displays.
