2022 Judith Wright Poetry Prize
The Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize for New and Emerging Poets seeks outstanding poetry by writers who have published no more than one collection of poems under their own name (i.e. writers who’ve had zero collections published, or one solo collection published). It remains one of the richest prizes for emerging poets, and is open to poets anywhere in the world.
In 2022, the major prize is $6000, with a second prize of $2000 and a third prize of $1000. All three winners will be published in Overland’s autumn 2023 issue.

Top 7 Spooky Jobs
It’s coming up to that spooky time of year, and if you’re a fan of everything frightful, we’ve got some spooky jobs you might want to look into.
Whether it’s leading ghost tours, directing funerals, or creating wicked costumes, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Take a look.
1. Forensic Pathologist
If you’re curious and have a strong stomach, this could be the job for you.
A Forensic Pathologists’ job is to determine exactly why or how someone has died, usually done through a process known as an autopsy. Forensic Pathologists may also gather evidence directly from a crime or accident scene, as well as use their expertise to testify in court.
If you’d like to become a Forensic Pathologist, you’ll need to first become a qualified medical practitioner, before undertaking further specialist training.
2. Funeral Director
Also known as a Mortician or Undertaker, a Funeral Director’s job is to help (you guessed it) plan a person’s funeral. This includes all the nitty-gritty details, such as helping family or loved ones pick out a coffin, collecting bodies from mortuaries and preparing them for burial, and delivering or disposing of ashes after a cremation.
You get to do some less morbid stuff too though, like picking out flowers and processing important documents.
There’s no specific qualifications necessary to work as a Funeral Director, but lots of experience will definitely help.
3. SFX Makeup Artist
Special Effects (or SFX) Makeup Artists are responsible for some of the magic we see on screen. They use their skills and tools to create realistic wounds, terrifying monster masks, weird facial features, and a whole other stack of things that transform actors into something else entirely!
Rick Baker, the SFX Artist responsible for creations in Star Wars, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Men in Black, says this about his work: “When you’re on the set and you get the makeup on this actor, and you actually see it start to become this living, breathing thing, it’s magical.”
Having training in makeup and arts can help you get your foot in the door with this career.
4. Ghost Tour Guide
Love history, the outdoors, and are a confident speaker? Becoming a Ghost Tour Guide could be ideal.
You’ll get to lead people through some of the most haunted places in the world, all while fascinating them with your extensive knowledge.
You won’t need any specific qualifications, just great storytelling skills.
5. Death Doula
A Death Doula’s (or Death Midwife) job is to help guide a person through the last stages of their life.
Rather than taking care of any physical needs, Death Doulas provide emotional and spiritual support and guidance to their patients. They work to alleviate some of the fear and anxiety around death, for both the person dying and their families.
There are no formal qualifications to become a Death Doula, but many have often worked in a health-related setting.
6. Haunted House Operator
Use your skills as a Haunted House Operator to create inventive and terrifying experiences. You can use your imagination and go wild! There’s a lot of work that goes in behind-the-scenes of a Haunted House; creating props, lighting effects, sound systems, animatronics, and more.

7. Spiritual Medium
Spiritual Mediums are people who can communicate between the living and the dead. They typically use this ability in a helpful fashion, by bringing comfort and understanding to the family and friends of people who have passed away.
Sometimes they have even been used to help solve crimes and mysteries.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Cyber Gap program is a 12-month online program designed to enhance your skills and employability in the cyber security field. You can be working towards any eligible qualification ranging from a Certificate III to a Master’s Degree, either full time or part time.

Do you need to Change your Preferences?
So you’ve applied to uni – congratulations!
Perhaps you’ve applied through a Tertiary Admissions Centre (TAC) like UAC, QTAC or VTAC. Maybe you applied directly to the university of your choice.
Either way, did you know that once you’ve submitted your applications, they’re still not set in stone? That means that you’ve got plenty of wiggle room and options to consider.
By the time you’ve submitted your applications, it’s assumed that you understand ‘preferences’ and what it means to your application.
But just in case you’re still a bit uncertain, here’s what it means. Preferences are just a term for the courses you want to apply for, listed in the order you’d like to study them.
At NEGS we recommend that you list your dream course(s) first, some more realistic options next, and one safe option last. That way you’ll increase the odds that you’ll get at least one offer in the main offer rounds.
Listing the maximum number of possible preferences on your applications is also a good strategy. Giving you the maximum opportunity to receive at least one offer – maybe more.
If you’re certain that you have applied to the best uni and selected the best courses for you, that’s great. Move on and wait for the offer rounds to start up.
But if you’ve decided that you’re not happy with the universities or courses you’ve listed, or perhaps the order you listed your preference just isn’t sitting right with you anymore, guess what?
There’s good news – the whole applications system is designed to allow you to change your preferences.
Most universities and TACs provide plenty of opportunities to change your preferences.
After submitting your application and before you take your exams or get your results, you can usually log into your application and adjust your preferences.
Tip: If you’ve received an early conditional offer for one or more of the courses on your preferences, and you’d still like more offers during the main rounds – it’s best to call the admission centre or institution directly if you’re unsure about what to do next.
Note: Changing your preferences is usually free, but some TACs may charge a fee if you change them more than two or three times.
Between receiving your exam results and the main offer round taking place, there is a window of time to change your preferences.

Once the main round offers have happened, another window is usually opened up. You’ll get the chance to change your preferences again and possibly receive more offers so you can choose which one to accept. Or, if you didn’t get an offer in the first round, you can have another go in the subsequent rounds.
Spend some time considering why you want to change your preferences before you go ahead and do it

If you’re unsure about what to do, pick up the phone and call someone at the TAC or university for advice

If any of these options ring true for you, then it could be a good idea to change your preferences.
If you get a higher ATAR than you expected (yay you), don’t immediately rush off and change your preferences just because you can apply for Law or Engineering now. If you’re happy with your preferences then stick with them – there’s no such thing as ‘wasting’ a good ATAR.
You might feel pressured into thinking you should change your list, particularly if your friends are talking about changing theirs and cut-off dates are coming up. Hold off, spend some time researching any changes you’re thinking of making, and be sure you’re making the changes for all the right reasons.
Double check any course pre-requisites as well as your eligibility before you go adding any new courses or moving them up your list. It would be a real shame to miss out on receiving more offers or the offer you really wanted because you didn’t take a few minutes to read the course entry criteria.
If you miss the change of preference cut-offs for the first round, you’ll get the chance to change them again before the next offer round.
Once all the offer rounds are over and you have an offer but it’s not for the course you really wanted, call up the university and find out what your options are. Perhaps you can transfer internally if there are spaces left or when places open up later in the year.
Most importantly, if you don’t receive any offers at all please remember that you still have lots of options. Find out about alternative pathways from universities, you may be happily surprised to learn about the number of choices available that could help get you into the uni course you’d like to study.
