NEGS News - Term 3 Week 10

The last week of term was a week of significant highlights, including the Year 12 Valedictory and Formal, and the announcement of our 2023 Senior Leaders.

Congratulations to:

Head Prefect: Vanessa Baker

Deputy Head Prefect: Grace Boughton

Prefects:

  •  Savanah Brown
  •  Tess Maurice
  •  Ella Severin
  •  Danika Watson

House Captains

  •  Emily Edmunds
  •  Megan Gerigk
  •  Eden Lochhead
  •  Lucinda Saunders
  •  Abbey Tierney
  •  Bianca Turner

We are very much looking forward to leading and working alongside these student leaders.

To our outgoing Prefects, thank you, for your leadership and service to the school. You are leaving with loads of fond memories. To all Year 12 students, we wish you every success and happiness in the days to come. You will be missed and the Class of 2022 have their mark.

Next term we welcome a new permanent PDHPE teacher, Kristen Willis, to the team. Kristen has taught in both primary and high school settings, in a range of schools in the region. She describes herself as a very sporty person who loves playing and coaching netball. She also enjoys playing touch football and has started playing rugby union this year.  Thank you to Mal Gaukroger for fulfilling the role of PDHPE teacher while transitioning to his new coastal lifestyle.

On Monday, I had the honour of representing NEGS at the Cathedral Service of Thanksgiving for the life and service of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia. It was a remarkable ceremony, based on hymns and bible readings selected by the Queen herself. The service was led by the Dean, and a thought-provoking sermon was delivered by The Bishop.  Local representatives of the Catholic diocese and the Presbyterian Churches were involved in the service.

Also, I wish to invite you all to join me for 19 forn19 Challenge for Anya's Wish, on Sunday, 16 October. As a school community we are supporting this important cause.

Liz van Genderen

Principal

As we break for the term, may I take this opportunity to thank the NEGS community for their efforts across Term 3. Be it on the sporting field or in the classroom, it has been incredibly busy, and it has taken plenty of commitment and, in some instances, sacrifice to represent yourselves and the school proudly. As we look to recharge our batteries, spare a thought for our Year 12 students, as they prepare for the HSC and for our students competing at various sporting and equestrian events.

If you are travelling, then I wish you a safe departure and return, and if the plan is to do nothing at all, then enjoy that, also.

I look forward to welcoming you back, to warmer weather, clearer skies, and a renewed energy, that will transcribe into positive and successful Term 4. If you are planning on representing the school at the 19 for 19 walk, please ensure that you have filled in the google sheet provided through check in. If your parents wish to join, please encourage them to do so through the event website.

Jamie Moore

Acting Deputy Principal / Director of Sport and Activities

2022 continues to be a year during which we are all reminded of the importance of well-being, tolerance, and resilience in our lives. As we head into the term break, our students are commended for their tenacity. Taking time during these holidays to rest, reset, and renergenise is important, as we recognise the last time our student’s experienced full-time, uninterrupted, on campus learning was three years ago in 2019.

As a staff, we are looking forward to Term Four and the many events it brings.

What a term! 3 IGSA hockey and netball trips, IPSHA and IGSA athletics, weekend equestrian events, local competitions, and State and National championships. It is mind-blowing how our students, parents, and staff have been able to fit so much into a 10-week period.

Congratulations to our Junior IGSA hockey team for making the semi-finals of the Junior, Division 1 competition, and also to the Silver Netballers for a win in the local comp and Gold going down narrowly in their GF.

To those competing over the holidays, good luck, and safe travels. I look forward to hearing of your adventures when you return.

We will kick off our summer sport offering in Term 4, so please be sure that you have submitted your choice form.

Thank you to the staff who have supported the girls throughout the term.

Year 12 HSC Showcase

With the conclusion of HSC Major Works, NEGS hosted an evening to showcase the various major works, completed by Year 12. The Showcase evening allowed our community to celebrate and acknowledge their achievements. Congratulations to all involved.

Year 12 Valedictory Lunch

Following the Valedictory Assembly, we welcomed all Year 12 girls and their families into the Assembly Hall for a light lunch. This was a lovely event, as the girls could share Valedictory's celebration with their parents, families, and each other.

Year 12 Valedictory Evening and Formal

Over the Thursday and Friday, evenings, our Year 12 girls and families celebrated their Valedictory and Formal. An evening event at the Tattersalls was a lovely way to conclude the Valedictory celebrations. It takes a Village!

There is a famous ancient proverb that says, it takes a village to raise a child. At NEGS, we believe our School is that village, where each child is supported by the whole NEGS community. After a couple of challenging years, it has been lovely to again this year start to gather again as a community, whether it has been on the side of the sports fields, at equestrian events or on the many weekends throughout the year when the P and F managed the BBQ at the Hockey Carnivals. Thank you to all our parents who have generously given their time to support these events and our children.

With excitement, we look towards 2023, to build a stronger village.

Your help is required.

We are looking for parent volunteers to get involved in 2023.

- P and F Management Committee consider joining the P and F Management Committee, nominations are open for these roles in 2023.

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Honorary Secretary
  • Honorary Treasurer

Ordinary Members who may wish to nominate for:

Looking for a fun evening whilst supporting our local community?

Seasons of New England, are celebrating ten years in 2023 and are holding a special evening at Deeargee woolshed. Tara from Seasons of New England is a NEGS old girl, and Deeargee woolshed has been in the careful hands of the same family for seven generations, with Cathie and Hugh Sutherland and their four children, Anna, Sophie, Charlie and Angus currently at the helm.  Cathie, Anna and Sophie are all old girls.

Please share this event with the wider NEGS community. It would be great to get a NEGS table or two.

AN ACTIVITY FOR THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Koala Colouring and Poster Competition

Armidale is an area of regional koala significance however, local and nationwide populations are declining. On the 11th of February 2022, koalas were listed as an endangered species. Once a thriving 3-4 million community, koala numbers are less than 200,000. Saving our koala population is vital to the species’ survival, and you and your students can help.

The Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership Project (NTKPP) is hosted by Southern New England Landcare Ltd (Southern New England Landcare), partnering with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. The project supports the NSW Government’s aspirational goal to: “Double the koala population in NSW by 2050”. The Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership – a project hosted by the local Landcare network here in Armidale, has established strong connections with the local community to develop key actions for koala conservation, focussing on:

  1. Koala habitat conservation
  2. Conservation through community action
  3. Safety And health of Koalas
  4. Building our knowledge.

Southern New England Landcare are also running a colouring and poster competition. The colouring in pages are below, however, the competition to design an A3 sized poster (either individual students or class) for the following topics:

  • Kindergarten – a general poster about koala facts aimed to increase general knowledge about koalas.
  • Years 1-2 - a general poster about koala facts aimed to increase general knowledge about koalas.
  • For Years 3-4 - a poster about the threats koalas are facing. It could focus on one threat or include all threats to koalas in our community.
  • For Years 5-6 – a poster about how students and the community can help save our local koala population.

To submit entries, please either drop them off to the Southern New England Landcare office in Hannahs Arcade or post them to PO Box 85, Armidale 2350 by the 28th of October.

The finalists will be displayed at the Black Gully Music Festival on the 12th of November.

The Black Gully Music Festival is located behind NERAM and starts at around 10am. It is a celebration of community, live local music and biodiversity.

Southern New England Landcare will have a stall with information and interactive displays.
