I am delighted to welcome you back to Term 2. I hope you enjoyed your break, spending time with family and friends and are returning to school feeling rested, energised and ready to embrace new opportunities.
For our boarding families, I wish you safe travels and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday afternoon when our boarding houses reopen.
A few reminders:
NEGS will participate in the ANZAC Service in Central Park on Tuesday, 25 April at 11.00 am. I hope to see a large contingent of NEGS students joining our Student Leaders for this significant event (NEGS will hold its own ANZAC Day Service on Wednesday, 26 April).
On Tuesday evening, Years 7 and 12 students and their families have Year group dinners (in the Dining Hall and Dr Jan Milburn Room, respectively).
Term 2 is sure to be busy. Remember to approach your school life with enthusiasm and determination, work hard and keep yourself well through sporting and co-curricular activities.
I want to welcome new staff to NEGS, I am thrilled about the experience and commitment they bring to our team.
Liz van Genderen
Principal
We welcome the following staff members this term and look forward to their contributions.
NEGS is very happy to welcome Royce Carroll for the start of Term 2. Royce will be taking on the Agriculture Teacher role.
Royce is in the final stages of completing a Bachelor of Education (Secondary Science) with an Agriculture major at the University of New England. He has also held roles as a Boarding Supervisor (TAS), a Grain Marketing Assistant with Delta Agribusiness and a Residential Advisor and Pastoral Assistant at St Albert's College.
NEGS Junior School is very happy to welcome Lisa Furner for the start of Term 2.
Lisa is an educational professional with 22 years of experience teaching K-6, curriculum development, educational therapy and leadership. Most recently, she has been providing Multi-sensory Structured Learning Therapy and education consultation through her practice, The Sunroom Support Services.
Lisa’s previous roles include Curriculum Coordinator at Al Faisal College, Assistant Principal at Glendale East Public School, and Coordinator at Green Valley. She has also worked as a classroom teacher on Stage 1 for many years, giving her valuable experience in developing effective teaching and assessment strategies to ensure the best possible student outcomes.
NEGS is very happy to welcome Emma Johnston for the start of Term 2 as our PDHPE Teacher.
Emma is in the final stages of completing a Bachelor of Education (PDHPE & HSIE) at the University of Newcastle. Emma is keen to be creative and make the learning experience enjoyable, relevant and nurturing and to not only see the students strive but for them to recognise their strengths and accomplishments as individuals.
She has also held roles as a Prefect Presence Program Facilitator (PCYC), a Governess at a cattle station in remote north Queensland and a Farm Hand on the family property at Gloucester.
NEGS is very happy to welcome Bella Oates Herrera for the start of Term 2. Bella will be taking on the Librarian role as well as teaching several classes.
Bella completed her studies at the University of New England and held multiple student leadership positions, including the role of Deputy Senior Resident Leader at Austin Page College.
Bella has recently been teaching Stage 4 and 5 HSIE classes at Guyra Central School, covering other subjects such as Art and PDHPE.
I am looking forward to welcoming our students back this week. As we head into Term 2, I would like to remind all that students are to return to school in full winter uniform. I encourage all parents and students to refamiliarize yourself with the uniform requirements and more widely, the uniform policy information that can be found in your child’s diary.
It is also important to remember that wearing a school uniform with pride is about more than just following the dress code. It is also about having a positive attitude and respecting our school and peers. Wearing a school uniform with pride means that we are proud to be part of our school community and that we are willing to represent our school positively.
I want to be very clear in stating that the school EC/Sport jacket is not part of the day school uniform and will only be allowed on the rare occasion that the weather warrants. The school makes this decision and will only be allowed outside the classroom.
In response to the State Government’s intention to ban mobile phones from schools by the end of 2023, and following on from a very informative and well-received series of presentations by the Safe on Socials organisation, the school has decided to undertake a review of our policy about the use of Digital Devices. We will keep our community informed throughout this process. In the meantime, I encourage all students and parents to review the information regarding the safe and appropriate use of mobile phones and digital devices that can be found in the front of the student diary.
I wish safe travels to our boarding students and look to the return of all students with renewed energy and ready to take on a new and busy term.

Deputy Principal
