Work Exposure in Government (WEX)

Average vs median salaries – what’s the difference?
Often when you read about careers, you’ll see an average salary listed somewhere in the information. Whilst that’s not a bad thing in any way, it can often shape your view of a job it is.
You might make assumptions about:
And you could be making those assumptions based purely off the figure you see in front of you. It’s not the best way to gauge careers that might suit you down the track, and it might not even be all that accurate. Here’s why…
Let’s look at some examples
In 2021 the Australian Bureau of Statistics published that the average salary in Australia was $1,737 a week or $90,324 a year (pre-tax).
Which sounds great, right? But the median salary reported in the same period was $1,209 per week, which is around $62,868 per year.
That’s a massive difference of $27,456 per year.
And the chances are if you asked any adults around you what they are earning, the majority would be clustered nearer to the $62,000 mark – so it’s more realistic too.
When you look at this year’s reported salary figures from the ATO, there’s a big discrepancy between many of the average and median figures:

Why are the figures so different?
Basically, it all comes down to maths and the way that the figures are calculated.
The ABC have an easy to understand example:
“Imagine there are 10 people in a room: nine of them earn $10,000 a year, and one of them earns $500,000 a year. What’s the average?
Altogether, they earn $590,000 in a year. So the average income in that room would be $59,000 ($590,000 divided by 10 people).”
In this case, the one lucky person who’s earning $500,000 pushed the average way up, but it’s not really a true reflection of what the “average” person is earning.
The median refers to the exact middle of a set of numbers. The first step to calculate the median would be to list all the salaries to be considered in an increasing order, i.e. starting from the lowest to the highest.
If the number of salaries is odd, then the median would be the salary figure in the middle of the list. If the number of salaries is even, the middle two salary figures are added together, and the sum then divided by two to determine the median salary.
So, in the scenario above the median salary would be $10,000, which is much more reflective of what most people in the room are earning.
What this means for you
It means than when you’re looking at potential careers, it’s best to look at median salaries for a more realistic idea of what you could be earning.
There’s no doubt that salary is going to be an important part of your career, but it’s just one aspect. It’s really important when you’re thinking about future careers and career pathways to focus on what you’re good at and what you’ll enjoy doing.
Insights into a Career as Plumbing Officer

SWG: What were your favourite subjects at school?
Carlie: Manual Arts (AKA Industrial Design and Technology)
SWG: How did you get to where you are today?
Carlie: While completing my schooling I also commenced a school-based apprenticeship. This meant I received my Year 12 certificate and went straight into full-time work to complete my apprenticeship.
SWG: Was the training hard?
Carlie: I wouldn’t say it was hard, but had its challenges like most training has when you are learning. I was also the only female in my classes throughout my whole TAFE course.
SWG: Do you have to be physically fit to work in construction?
Carlie: Within reason but you just need to remember you condition your body along the way.
SWG: What does a typical day at work look like for you?
Carlie: A typical day for me is conducting site inspections relating to unlawful, unlicensed, or non-complaint plumbing & drainage work. Once a breach of the Act has been confirmed then it is all about drafting up Enforcement Notices to be issued under the investigation.
SWG: What do you love most about your job?
Carlie: Every day is different, a mix of both indoor and outdoor work. Educating the community and ensuring that we all have a safe drinking supply and that all sewerage is discharged to the sewer network and nowhere else.
SWG: What’s the best piece of advice you would give to anyone considering a career in the construction industry?
Carlie: Go for it because you have nothing to lose but lots to gain and you will never know unless you give it a go.
SWG: What future careers goals have you set for yourself?
Carlie: To complete a Diploma in Government Investigations, other than that I just like to see where the path leads me.

A Day in the Life of an Engineering Student
This guest blog was written by Tequile Ryan, Engineering and Mathematics student at the University of Queensland.
Having grown up in the regional town of Mackay, university life in Brisbane seemed like a daunting new world. No longer would I have to wear a uniform, be woken up for school by my Mum or be strictly learning from 8:30am-3pm. And although it was a difficult adjustment at first, I now look forward to what each day brings at the University of Queensland.
Morning
I usually wake up at 7am – especially if my classes begin at 8am – and have Weet-Bix for breakfast. I try to schedule my timetable so that I start classes after 9am because I find that my concentration is better, and 8am starts become harder to commit to later in the semester.
Classes
One of the coolest things about university is the flexibility to choose your own timetable. As a current second-year student studying a double degree Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Mathematics at UQ, I usually have 19 hours of class time each week (and no more than 21). Many people I know structure their timetable to squeeze all their classes into one or two days each week. This may work well for someone who has fewer class hours or needs to travel long distances to university, but I find it difficult to concentrate for several hours at a time, so I schedule my classes over four or five days.
Lunch
UQ is abundant with facilities that contain microwaves and fridges (such as in the libraries), so I never have to worry about bringing in food. If I do decide to buy food, UQ has plenty of cafes and other great places to eat on campus.
Afternoon
After having a break for lunch, I usually have more classes in the afternoon. Although most of my classes record lectures (which is very helpful for revision), I try to attend them in person or watch them live online – otherwise it’s very easy to fall behind!
After my last class, I use any free time before dinner to revise, catch-up or work on any assignments. After dinner, I’ll probably do more university work and then wind down by reading a book or watching YouTube before going to bed. At the start of the semester, I get around eight hours of sleep, but towards the end, this becomes more like six hours.
Outside University
During the semester, I like participating in UQ engineering networking events, Engineering Student Ambassador work and attending energy conferences and leadership programs through the Australian Power Institute. For fun, I like to get involved in UQ Veg Society events.

Low ATAR Course Options at Australian Universities
If you’re finishing up in Year 12 this year and you’re ATAR eligible, then you already know that you can apply to go to uni.
But what if you’re worried that your exams might not go well and your ATAR could be lower than expected? Or perhaps your predicted ATAR is low and you’d love to go to uni but you’re stressing that you won’t get an offer.
Well, we have good news for you. There are more courses than ever being offered by Australian Universities that have low ATAR requirements.
Low ATAR course options at Australian Universities
When we searched Course Seeker for courses that required an ATAR between 30 and 50, it came up with a whopping 496 courses to choose from.
Here are just a few examples:
So if you are keen to pursue a career in Agriculture, Business, Architecture or Construction, Health (including Nursing), IT, Science (and plenty of other areas); but you are expecting or receive a low ATAR, remember there are plenty of courses that you could get an offer for.
If you haven’t got any low ATAR options listed on your preferences, or you have them listed but they’re not at the top, you can change your preferences before the cut-off dates for offer rounds. Which could increase your chances of receiving an offer (or offers) that you really want.
You’ll still have a choice about where you study too
With 29 institutions on Course Seeker offering course options with low ATAR requirements, you may not even be limited by where you want to study. There are also online options to consider, allowing you to apply for courses with universities in other states and complete your studies remotely.
Find out what’s possible
Perhaps a course you really want to do a course at a specific university is out of your reach if your ATAR doesn’t quite hit the mark. What can you do?
Again, you’ll still have options. Firstly, it’s worth calling the university directly and having a chat with someone in the Future Students team. They’ll be able to identify all the options on offer that could help you get into a similar course with lower entry requirements, help you to find bridging or tertiary preparation courses that could do the trick, or explain how internal transfers could work in your favour.
University of Newcastle – Miroma Bunbilla Pre-Entry Program to Medicine
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, the Miroma Bunbilla Program is a pre-entry pathway to the Joint Medical Program (JMP).
The Miroma Bunbilla program is a five-day intensive assessment, coordinated by the University’s Thurru Indigenous Health Unit. It will be delivered from December 5 to 9 2022, pairing students with mentors to successfully start medical school. The program extends beyond Newcastle to reach those outside the Hunter region and now also runs in Armidale, Moree, Tamworth, Taree and Orange.
Applicants who apply through this pathway do not need to sit the UCAT to be eligible for entry into the JMP.
Participants are required to attend all scheduled sessions within the 5 day Miroma Bunbilla Program. Should you miss any scheduled activity you will not qualify to be considered for entry to the JMP through this pathway.
Prior to applying to the Miroma Bunbilla program, you will need to apply to the JMP through UAC before 30 September 2022.

Sydney’s Future Leaders Scheme allows school captains and dux students to apply for a degree with a lower ATAR requirement. In most cases, it means you can gain entry into a degree with 5 less points than would usually be required.

Bond Adjustment Factors
Bond University offer adjustment factors for a wide variety of circumstances, and you can receive an extra 2 points for your leadership achievements. There are lots of other things you can earn bonus points for too, for a total of 5.

Through the Aspire Community Contribution Program, you can get an early offer based on your community and leadership experience (including if you’ve been a school captain or leader).
